iTUNES, THIS SHOULD GO UNDER ROCK, OR PSYCHEDELIC, NOT WORLD! WORLD MUSIC IS A USELESS TERM! Anyway, all of the albums these are from (Mutantes' first four or five, especially the first and third) are worth having because they are excellent Tropicália. Also, this is missing all the diacriticals. It's Adeus Maria Fulô; Ave Lúcifer, etc... On a more musical note, the lyrics are excellent, and the best songs are Ave, Lúcifer; Panis et Circenses, A Minha Menina, Adeus MAria Fulô, Dia 36, and Fuga. The only glaring absences are Virgínia and Jardim Eléctrico, both from the fourth album of the latter's title. Os Mutantes was perhaps the best strictly-psychedelic band, and certainly the best Brazilian one; it's a question of them or the Grateful Dead for best ever. They were deliciously strange musically and in their actions, openly defying the Brazilian dictatorship of the time. Think Mamas and Papas + Frank Zappa + Beatles + Grateful Dead + 13th Floor Elevators + Merry Pranksters-like attitude in a military dictatorship + lots of drugs + civil unrest + samba influence + Tom Zé, all sung in Portuguese, and you might have an idea of Tropicália's awesomeness. But this compilation, while all the songs are excellent, fails to do them justice.

This album is great, and this band kills it. They were WAY ahead of their time. Look for the song "Top Top" as well. They sell it on iTunes ...it is one of their best.

Os Mutantes were excellent in many respects. It's hard to understand the full siginificance of the music of this period if you don't speak Portugese or know how crazy and censored the political climate was in Brasil then. Many artists in the Tropicalismo movement were imprisoned or exiled because of their songs, which were considered revolutionary propaganda by the government. To the Brasilian people the songs of many of the Tropicalismo artists are regarded as high literary art. If you like this also check out Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, and Antonio Carlos Jobim (who was not tropicalismo but invented bossa nova).

I love this stuff. They try it all and succeed every time, this music breaks all the barriers and is still Brazilian as hell. Britpop euroinvasion look out, this stuff is going to top the charts. I like Animals, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Geto Boys, Slayer, and Minor Threat. And this stuff makes me far happier. Happy music for ugly losers. Jesus hates me and satan adores me and I could care less because I got this album.

Often overlooked, Os Mutantes' music is a blast to listen to, be it mellow or manic. This collection has most of Os Mutantes' best work, ("A Minha Menina" "Bat Macumba" "Baby (1971)" "Cantor de Mambo") and some other well picked cuts ("Panis Et Circenses" "El Justiciero"). The collection shows Os Mutantes' ability to shift from genre to genre while maintaining a whimsical overtone. Their music is a testament to their influence on modern rockers, as they put together well-constructed and fun music. This collection is missing, however, some of Os Mutantes' other greats ("Top Top" "Jardim Elétrico"). Hopefully, iTunes will fill in the gaps left by this compilation.
