There will no doubt be some who struggle with what to make of this album, especially those who are fans of Ortega's other work. This album is different in a way that catches you off guard, but then quickly pulls you in.
What Fernando Ortega has done here is take the single biggest turning point of human history and set it to music, interspersing it with readings of Scripture that tell the story of God's redemption. The songs following each reading are more like musical reflections on what's just been read, often containing little lyrical content beyond the Scripture itself. And that's all that is needed--the story of God's redemptive love stands strong on its own, it needs to lyrical embellishment. The songs that do stand as more traditional offerings then provide commentary and invitation, bringing the listener ever deeper into the story.
A departure? Most assuredly. Worth it? Most definitely.
