Szell really was an outstanding conductor for Cleveland; it was under his reign that the orchestra reached its height. The famed precision of the orchestra is seen in candid display during the concertos, and although the orchestra for much of the pieces takes a background to the beautiful piano playing, they leave a solid foundation that the piano builds upon. The pieces themselves are simply outstanding and moving to listen to, and I recommend that if you're curious about the Cleveland Orchestra at the beginning of its time at the top or want to hear some great piano playing, that this is the album for you.

This was my first introduction to Prokofiev's piano music. There have been many fine recordings sense but I find myself still returning to this one. The spirit of the pieces, the tempi, the sense of playfulness and sarcasm are all fleshed out to it's fullest. This shows Graffmen and Szell at their finest.
